Muir is ready to go extra mile in bid to break 31-year-old record

-

Dundee Hawkhill Harrier Laura Muir will contest the one mile at the Muller Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham tomorrow.

The 25-year-old from Milnathort will have an eye on Kirsty Wade’s 31-year-old British indoor mile record of 4:23.86.

And lining up alongside Muir, victorious in the 3,000m at last week’s British Indoor Championships, will be training partner Jemma Reekie, who won the 1,500m in Birmingham.

Having missed last weekend’s 3,000m with illness, Muir’s Dundee Hawkhill colleague will make her bid for a place at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow next month by contesting the 3,000m.

The field includes six Ethiopian athletes, headed by Alemaz Samuel and Gudaf

Tsegay.

The men’s track highlight could well be the 1,500m featuring Ethiopian Yomif Kejelcha, who came close to breaking the world indoor mile record at the Millrose Games in New York last week.

The home contingent features newly-crowned UK 3,000m champion Chris O’Hare, Neil Gourley, Andrew Butchart and US-based Josh Kerr.

Pitreavie’s Eilidh Doyle will contest the 400m hoping to secure a berth in the GB team for the European Championships.

Doyle will come up against Amber Anning and Laviai Nielsen, silver and bronze medallists in Birmingham.
