Fresh plea for information on mystery death

POLICE: Appeal to public as year-old case of Dundee man, 67, remains unsolved

Mystery still surrounds the death of a Dundee man who was found dying in a city street more than a year ago.

John Ogston, 67, was found with serious injuries on Mains Road in the Hilltown on New Years’ night 2018.

He had been on his way home from a nearby pub with a friend when he was fatally injured.

Soon after the discovery, the police realised John’s injuries were consistent with having been run over by a car, and stepped up efforts to find out what vehicles were in the vicinity that night.

The investigation was hampered by distant and poor quality CCTV footage of the Bayne Square junction with police sources describing it as one of the most frustrating cases in recent years.

Police spent months questioning local drivers in a bid to find any witnesses and alert the driver, who they believe was oblivious to the fact he or she had run over Mr Ogston.

Coldside Labour councillor George McIrvine said: “After over a year surrounding the tragic circumstances of Mr Ogston it is only right to make another plea to the public in the hope they may have heard of someone being involved in an accident to make contact with the police to assist in their ongoing inquiry.

“I hope for a positive outcome, for the sake of the family, in order to provide them with some closure.”

Crimestoppers national manager Angela Parker said: “Over a year has passed since John’s death and still those that knew him are left with unanswered questions.

“We as a charity understand that sometimes going to the police isn’t an option for people, which is why we offer a service that guarantees your anonymity and ensures you have a voice without having to reveal who you are.

“If you have any information on what happened to John that night, you can contact us on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org. In more than 30 years, we have always kept our promise of anonymity.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The passage of time is no barrier to the investigation of unresolved cases, and in the view of Police Scotland these cases are never closed.

“Mr Ogston’s family have been fully informed of the progress of the inquiry.

“If anyone has any new information that could assist the investigation please contact police via the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.”
