Drink-driver who smashed into car then fled could face prison

A motorist who smashed into the back of another car at more than 50mph was found to be nearly five times over the drink-drive limit.

Andrew Roxburgh then pretended to stop before driving off in his badly damaged car and leaving the dual carriageway to tour around several busy residential streets.

When police caught up with Roxburgh more than two hours later, he was found to have an alcohol reading of almost exactly five times over the limit.

Yesterday, Sheriff James Macdonald banned Roxburgh from driving on an interim basis and warned him that he could be sent to prison.

He told Perth Sheriff Court: “The reading is high and clearly there is an issue of bad driving associated with it.”

Roxburgh, 39, of Eriskay Place, Perth, admitted driving carelessly and colliding with Laura Pacitti’s Ford Focus on the A9 Perth bypass on August 3 last year.

He also admitted drinkdriving in various Perth streets and failing to stop and give details after an accident had taken place on the dual carriageway.

Depute fiscal Michael Sweeney told the court: “Laura Pacitti was driving northbound. She and another vehicle were in lane one, travelling at 50 miles per hour due to heavy traffic.

“She pulled out to overtake. On completing her manoeuvre she observed the vehicle driven by the accused approaching behind her.

“That then crashed into the back of her vehicle. She was unable to take any action to avoid the crash.

“There was extensive front end damage to the accused’s vehicle.”
