Lyons share of the action as Gable Endies edge it

Bit of revenge for the home side after defeat by Loons in the League Cup

-

Montrose took their place in the next round of the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Cup with a win over derby rivals Forfar at Links Park last night.

The victory gave Montrose some revenge for their defeat at the hands of their League 1 rivals in the Betfred Cup last month.

Both teams made changes from the sides which played in the league on Saturday and it was Montrose who were first to threaten on 14 minutes when a 25-yard shot from Patrick Cregg was saved by Mark McCallum.

Four minutes later, a fierce drive from Josh Skelly was tipped for a corner by McCallum.

On 28 minutes a header from Lewis Milne was well saved by the keeper.

Forfar grabbed the lead on 35 minutes. A corner from Ross Forbes was dropped by Aaron Lennox and Murray MacKintosh slammed the loose ball home from close range.

Montrose equalised just two minutes later. A lovely ball from Paul Watson found Blair Lyons and he set up Milne to fire home.

The home side had the first chance of the second half in 56 minutes. Skelly laid the ball back for Milne to fire wide after a good passing move.

Forfar had a glorious chance on 58 minutes when a Connor Coupe shot was pushed out by Lennox and Jordan Kirkpatrick put the rebound over.

Montrose scored what proved to be the winner on 74 minutes. A Lyons effort from the byeline was deflected into his own net by Calum Tapping.

Forfar threw men forward and on 80 minutes a Michael Travis header from a corner was headed over his own bar by Andrew Steeves.

Montrose went close to sealing victory as time ran out when Ross Campbell was inches away from connecting with a Milne cross in front of goal.
