Plans to transform an old school in Kirkcaldy into a housing estate will be presented to the public this week.

The former Viewforth High School and its grounds could be converted into around 100 new homes.

Edinburgh-based developer Whiteburn Projects is to host the first of two public consultation events on Thursday.

People will be able to learn more about the proposal, which involves renovation of the original C-listed school building, demolition of another listed building and creation of three and four-bedroom houses and two-bedroom apartments.

They will also be able to give their views and feedback before detailed designs are drawn up over the next few months.

Viewforth High School, in Loughborough Road, closed in 2016, when it was replaced by a new school at the Windmill Community Campus.

In October 2017 a fire caused significant damage to its annexe, Eastbank House.

Roger Bainbridge, Whiteburn Projects design and delivery director, said the firm intended to submit a detailed planning application for the land later this year and the consultation event would allow the company to update the public and take views into consideration as proposals are developed.

He said Whiteburn was a member of the Considerate Constructor Scheme and, as such, was fully committed to a programme of engagement with local communities.

“It is important to us that we begin this process as early as possible in the overall project to allow us to understand and consider the views from as many interested parties as we can,” said Mr Bainbridge.

“The first of our two planned community consultation events allow us to get that process under way.”

The event in the Strathearn Hotel, Wishart Place, will take place from 3.30-7.30pm.

Another will be held on September 19. Whiteburn Projects also intends to discuss a range of community benefits linked to the development with the council.

“It is important to us that we begin this process as early as possible in the overall project. ROGER BAINBRIDGE
