100 years ago

For the purpose of obtaining an adequate supply of sand in connection with the house building scheme at Stornoway, it has been found necessary to lay a waggon line to the seashore near the Aignish Churchyard. The Branahuie men have been making demands in connection with the laying of the line which practicall­y amount to opposition, and Lord Leverhulme visited the village and met the crofters to discuss their grievances. The villagers desire compensati­on and claim a royalty on the sand taken.

Dundee Corporatio­n Works Committee agreed last night that School Road, Downfield, should be closed to vehicular traffic. Parents in the neighbourh­ood had petitioned for this following the collision of a corporatio­n bus with a disused railway bridge on the day of the Queen’s visit to Dundee. Bollards will close off the road at the railway bridge, but Mr James Scott, works convener, made it clear last night there might be further long-term changes. Closure would throw extra traffic on to Kingsway and Camperdown Road.

A 12-year-old boy devised an unusual way of making summer holiday cash – by renting himself out as a shoplifter. He wrote to shops in the New Forest saying that, for a small fee, he would try to steal from their shelves to “test security.” One of the 20 shop owners contacted the police. PC Dave Atwill commented: “The lad is very bright and was clearly making his offer in all innocence. There was no malice intended.” The boy’s mother said “He was a bit overzealou­s, to say the least.”

A scorching summer of sell-out events has netted £9 million for Perth and Kinross, analysts have revealed. The 2018 heatwave helped deliver a massive boost to the local economy, with record crowds flocking to family favourites such as the Scottish Game Fair and Rewind Festival. Big name shows, including the Noel Gallagherh­eadlined BBC’s Biggest Weekend at Scone Palace, brought in the bumper revenues over the last three months. Number crunchers at Perth and Kinross Council have been monitoring each event.
