Star power diminished in Comrie

-

Hollywood star Gerard Butler has said locals in his mum’s home village are unimpressed by his fame.

The actor revealed the older residents he meets on visits to Comrie, Perthshire, are more interested in talking about his family and the weather than his film career.

Butler’s mother Margaret has lived in the village for more than 20 years and he travels there to visit her regularly.

The 49-year-old, originally from Paisley, Renfrewshire, has sponsored a number of local events and charities in the area.

Asked in an interview on US television if people got excited when he returned home, he said: “Not as excited as I think they should.

“They always say ‘How’s your mum?’. I’m like ‘What about me? You see my mum all the time, she lives in this village’.

“They say ‘How long you home for?’ and ‘the weather’s held up’.”

He added: “I love the people in my village and especially the four of them that are under 75.

“We have an amazing pipe band, but it’s kind of sad as it’s slowly dwindling every year.

“We have a Comrie fortnight, it’s a two week celebration, and the first time I went there about 25 years ago it felt like there was 1,000 people in the pipe band and now there’s like seven and a half. I’m thinking of taking it up to go help them out.

“I love getting up there – it’s so beautiful.

“I went back there recently to see my mammy and my stepdad and did a bit of biking.”

Butler is currently starring in Angel Has Fallen, the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen.

In the movie, he reprises his role as Secret Service agent Mike Banning.

His character is framed for the attempted assassination of the president, played again by Morgan Freeman, and he sets out to uncover the real threat while trying to evade his Secret Service colleagues and the FBI.

He attended the premiere with girlfriend Morgan Brown earlier this week.
