A cyclist has died following a head-on collision with a van on a country road in Fife.

The accident happened on the B937 road close to Giffordtown at around noon yesterday.

Police and ambulance services, including an air ambulance crew, were called to the scene and the road was closed as paramedics attended to those involved.

Officers have also opened an investigation into how the tragedy occurred.

One onlooker, who asked not to be named, said: “Everyone was very shaken up.

“The air ambulance was parked in a potato field by the side of the road.

“The police had cordoned off the road, but you could see where the accident had happened further up, beyond the junction.

“There was what looked like someone on the road under a blanket. It was really grim.

“It had been such a lovely day with the weather and lots of cyclists out on the roads.”

A spokesman for Police Scotland said: “Officers were alerted to a road traffic collision at 12.10pm on Sunday August 25 close to Giffordtown village where a male cyclist had been involved in an accident with a motorist.

“The road was closed and local diversions were put in place as emergency services continued at the scene.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident or motorists with dash cam footage is urged to contact Police Scotland by calling 101 and quoting incident number 2017 of August 25.”

The tragedy is the second involving a cyclist on Fife roads in recent weeks.

Only last month a man was found seriously injured on the A917 between Elie and St Monans.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but died soon after.

Campaigners have been calling for the creation of a Tay Estuary cycle loop to provide safe routes for riders and to ease congestion on the roads.

“It had been such a lovely day with the weather and lots of cyclists out on the roads. ONLOOKER
