McColgan seals place in Doha

Eilish McColgan (Dundee Hawkhill) forged ahead after only two laps of the 5,000m final at the UK Championsh­ips/World Trials in Birmingham, winning the title and securing her place at next month’s Doha World Championsh­ips.

McColgan’s solo run in the 28C conditions brought her to the finish in 15 minutes 21.38 seconds while Jessica Judd and Laura Weightman broke from the pack to take second and third 14 seconds adrift.

McColgan said: “I knew it was going to be a tough year but I said I want to be in Doha.”

Andrew Butchart (Central AC) covered the final kilometre in two minutes 28 seconds to finish the 5,000m in 13 minutes 54.29 seconds.

Having booked his Doha ticket, the Dunblane athlete said: “I’ll have a mini-celebratio­n and then I’ll get back to work.”

Sarah McDonald outsprinte­d Kilbarchan’s Jemma Reekie to win the 1,500m timed at 4:22.95 while Jenny Selman placed fifth and Fife colleague Steph Pennycook 12th.

Neil Gourley (Giffnock) sprinted home in the men’s 1,500m (3:48.36) ahead of Edinburgh duo Josh Kerr and Jake Wightman.

A tense final 50m in the women’s 800m saw Lynsey Sharp (Edinburgh AC) edged out by Shelayna Oskan-Clarke’s 2:02.67, both bagging Doha selection.

Lasswade’s Guy Learmonth came second in a blanket finish in the men’s 800m, sharing a time of 1:46.79 with winner Spencer Thomas.

Triple European champion Dina AsherSmith won the 100m in 10.96, with Asha Philip securing silver in 11.29.

Banchory athlete Alisha Rees performed well in the heats to make the final, placing eighth in 11.71.

The 200m went to Jodie Williams (22.07) with defending champion Beth Dobbin (Edinburgh AC) second.

The men’s 100m final saw the top three all share a time of 10.18. Ojie Edoburun dipped for the line millimetre­s ahead of Adam Gemili and Zharnel Hughes.

Gemili came back to win the 200m in 20.08 with Hughes second at 20.25.

Harry Coppell won the pole vault with 5.71m while Jax Thoirs finished second, clearing 5.56m, a new Scottish outdoor record.

Inverness athlete Kirsty Law won the discus (54.23m), while Pitreavie’s Stephen MacKenzie placed ninth in the long jump (7.21m) won by decathlete Tim Duckworth with 7.92m.
