Lichties favourite Linn the hero in first league victory

ALLOA 0 ARBROATH 1

Arbroath manager Dick Campbell hailed his team’s performance after they secured their first win over Alloa in seven years – and their first Championship victory after an absence of 16 years.

The Lichties now sit fifth in the table with four points from their first three games, looking down on established sides Inverness CT, Dunfermline and Partick Thistle.

The experienced boss said: “Both teams looked as if they wanted to play football and we were excellent and edged the game.

“Our keeper did not have one save to make in the game and overall we managed and controlled the game and we deserved the win.”

Arbroath started the stronger side by far and had the home defence pinned back with wave after wave of attacking football.

Bobby Linn was the danger man for Arbroath and he came close with a fierce shot from the edge of the box into the hands of Neil Parry in the home goal.

Jason Thomson then came close with a header at the back post but the effort went just wide.

Linn continued to torment the home defence and each time he had control of the ball Arbroath were a threat.

Early in the first half he was rewarded with the opener for the visitors when he connected with an inch-perfect Greig Spence pass at the edge of the home penalty box and fired an unstoppable shot past Parry.

Arbroath remained in total control of the match and despite numerous chances they were unable to convert their dominance into the safety of a second goal.

On a rare attack late into the second half Alloa came close when Kevin O’Hara cut the ball back into the path of Liam Buchanan and from close range he blasted the ball into the side netting in Alloa’s best chance of the match.

Linn said: “We knew what we were coming to and on our performance we deserved to win.

“We put a lot into the game and we will continue to fight for every point that we can”
