Derby hype won’t faze United, insists Pawlett
TANGERINES: League leaders will remain focused during build-up to big Tannadice clash
Dundee United’s players won’t be getting caught up in derby hype, insists Peter Pawlett.
The midfielder revealed the Tangerines had a discussion right after their 2-0 win at Dunfermline on Saturday, during which they all agreed to keep a lid on things.
United bossed the game at East End Park to continue their perfect start to the Championship campaign. Getting the better of Inverness at home on opening day, a victory on the road against Partick Thistle and then a convincing win over the Pars all adds up to a terrific start to the season for Robbie Neilson’s men.
The excitement is about to increase exponentially, though, as Friday night’s Tannadice clash against neighbours Dundee approaches.
Pawlett is confident that the Tangerines will be able to block it all out.
He said: “It is a good start to the season but, as we said to each other in the dressing room right after the Dunfermline game, we are only three games in.
“We just need to focus game by game.
“It is about getting through the next match, taking three points and then moving on. That’s how we are approaching it this season.
“As a player, you are paid to do that. Fans can get right up for games but we have to remain professional.
“We need to have the same diligence every day of every week regardless of the opposition.
“We will do the analysis, assess their strengths and weaknesses but it is just another game for us.
“We know the fact that it is a derby next means there will be added pressure but we have to deal with that in the right way.
“Our target on Friday will be getting the three points and then moving on,” added the former Aberdeen man.
“It is an important game of football and I do know how much winning a Dundee derby would mean to the fans. There is hype around it already.
“However, for us it is vital to remain professional and approach the match in the right way.
“It is a big day for the fans but we are keeping a lid on it.”
