Worldwide interest attaches to the first session of the Internatio­nal Labour Conference created by the Peace Treaty, which is to be held in Washington when the delegates from America, Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan, Belgium, Cuba, Poland and Czecho-Slovakia will have under discussion a variety of important subjects. This includes the applicatio­n of a universal eight-hours day or a 48-hour week, the prevention of unemployme­nt and the conditions of employment of woman and children.

A father who wants to take legal action against the headmaster of his son’s school for ordering him to shave before sitting an A level examinatio­n has now been told that the action would have no chance of success. Mr Leslie Phipps of Birmingham says that the head’s orders put his son Peter off his stride and may have upset him in a way that contribute­d to his failing the examinatio­n. Of 20 boys scrutinise­d before they sat the exam, four were told to take off sideboards and moustaches. Peter agreed to do so.

Young Lee-Anne Colgan was the most envied girl in Dundee yesterday after not only seeing Take That in Glasgow, but meeting the band before the show. Robbie, Mark, Jason, Howard and Gary pledge to meet the Whitfield High pupil, who is recovering from illness and injuries suffered in a car crash, and they kept their promise. They took time out from thier hectic schedule to meet LeeAnne (12) and her mother Linda before the concert at the SECC. “It was absolutely great,” said a thrilled Lee-Anne.

Businesses in Dundee are already toasting the success of the V&A in Dundee and anticipate a huge surge in visitor numbers. Hotels across the city say they are already close to capacity for the weekend the V&A opens, when 20,000 people are expected to attend the two-day 3D Festival marking the occasion. Premises are even creating their own V&A-themed cocktails to capitalise on the museum’s popularity. Ronnie MacKay, general manager at Apex City Quay Hotel, said: “There is such a buzz in the city and beyond.”
