Winger Kent returns to Ibrox as Rangers agree £6.5 million fee

-

Rangers responded emphatically to defeat in the first Old Firm derby of the season when they agreed a £6.5 million fee with Liverpool for winger Ryan Kent last night.

The 22-year-old, who was named PFA Scotland young player of the year last season after impressing on loan at Ibrox from the European champions, put pen to paper on a four-year deal to return to Scotland permanently.

Gers boss Steven Gerrard claimed following Celtic’s 2-0 win at Ibrox on Sunday that any transfer would have to come “out of the blue” but it appears the Light Blues have achieved just that, agreeing a fee with Liverpool just as Kent was set to board a plane to Belgium from Manchester with a view to joining Club Brugge.

Kent, who scored six goals and contributed nine assists in his debut campaign in Scotland, was the biggest signing of deadline day in Scotland as Rangers worked to get the deal over the line before midnight.

Kent’s arrival was one of several moves on a busy final day of the window at Ibrox.

Summer signing Jake Hastie joined Rotherham on a season-long loan, while former Scotland midfielder Graham Dorrans was linked with Kilmarnock after agreeing a deal to tear up his contract and midfielder Jason Holt moved to St Johnstone on loan.

Gerrard’s side also agreed a deal to terminate striker Joe Dodoo’s contract.

Elsewhere, Motherwell signed former Kilmarnock and Dundee midfielder Mark O’Hara on a season-long loan from Peterborough.

Well left-back Adam Livingstone has joined Morton on loan, while attacking midfielder Craig Tanner has rejected the offer of a four-month contract extension after recovering from a serious knee injury and has left the Fir Park club.

Hibs confirmed the arrival of right-back Jason Naismith on a season-long loan from Peterborough United.

Kilmarnock were linked with a number of players including Celtic pair Jack Hendry and Calvin Miller, both formerly of Dundee, but left it late to announce the signings of Harvey St Clair and Connor Johnson on season-long loans from Venezia and Wolves respectively.

The Rugby Park club, who signed Dundee United striker Osman Sow on loan until January, released veteran former St Mirren and Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot from his contract.

Hamilton signed 22-year-old German midfielder Adrian Beck from Union Saint-Gilloise in the Belgian second tier on a season-long loan, while Livingston released former Rangers winger Gregg Wylde.
