The Love Food Hate Waste cookery theatre
Dundee Flower and Food Festival has teamed up with Zero Waste Scotland to reduce food waste at the Festival bringing their Love Food Hate Waste campaign to visitors at the demonstration kitchen. Throughout the weekend chefs will be sharing tips on planning meals and using up leftovers, providing valuable information to help festival visitors reduce their food waste.
The demonstration kitchen is proud to host some of Scotland’s best chefs and feature a wide variety of Scottish cooking and produce. Several chefs have been finalists or winners in recent BBC MasterChef competitions.
Returning to the Festival on Saturday, will be the 2016 BBC MasterChef: The Professionals champion, Gary Maclean. A big fan of the festival, Gary has been a chef lecturer at the City of Glasgow College for 16 years. A passionate educator, his dedication to enriching the students’ experience is renowned.
On Sunday three MasterChef competitors will be delighting the audience and offering food waste saving advice.
Jilly McCord is a history and politics teacher at Dollar Academy, Perthshire. Jilly entered MasterChef 2019 after years of cooking for her friends and family, who encouraged her to give it a go. Jilly made it through to the final three of the competition and was runner-up to deserving winner Irini Tzortzoglou. Jilly is also a former international rugby player and represented Scotland 47 times.
Jamie Scott is the chef/proprietor of the Newport Restaurant, Newport-on-Tay, Fife. After winning BBC MasterChef: The Professionals 2014 Jamie worked on his own projects with pop-up restaurants, guest chef appearances, and food festival demonstrations. In 2016, Jamie and his wife Kelly opened The Newport, which was awarded 2 AA Rosettes only weeks later. It appears in the Michelin Guide, and is currently Scottish AA Restaurant of the Year.
Dean Banks of the Haar Restaurant, St Andrews was raised in Arbroath and trained at Rick Stein’s The Seafood Restaurant. He has worked in and visited more than 40 countries and was a 2018 BBC MasterChef: The Professionals finalist. He simply lets food speak for itself, using the best local produce and a fusion of global cooking styles and flavour profiles.
The chefs in the demonstration kitchen will be helping visitors rethink how they shop, plan meals better and make exciting dishes from leftovers – together it can make a big difference. Love Food Hate Waste provides practical advice to householders on how to avoid putting food in the bin, use it well and save money in the process. The Zero Waste Scotland team will be at the event over the entire weekend to chat to visitors about reducing waste.
