Wilson takes over reins at Glebe Park
Brechin City have confirmed the appointment of former Celtic and Dundee United defender Mark Wilson as manager.
The 35-year-old, who retired from playing in 2015, will be supported by Stevie Campbell, who is remaining as assistant manager at Glebe Park.
Wilson has previous management experience at Airdrieonians where he was appointed head coach in October 2016.
His first match in the dugout will see him come up against his ex-Celtic team-mate Paul Hartley, who brings his Cove Rangers side to Glebe Park for a League Two meeting a week on Saturday.
“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to manage Brechin City and can’t wait to meet the players and get started,” Wilson said.
“We have a squad of players mixed with youth and experience that I believe can improve on the position we currently sit in after five games of the season.
“Myself and my backroom staff look forward to the challenge and hope we can deliver a successful period for the club.”
Despite difficult circumstances at Airdrie, Wilson led the club to third place in League One that season before standing down from his position following a penalty shootout defeat in the play-offs against Alloa Athletic.
Brechin chairman Ken Ferguson said the club had received a wide range of applications but believes Wilson, who made 137 appearances for Dundee United before a £500,000 move to Celtic in 2006, is the right fit.
“We welcome Mark to Brechin City FC and we look forward to working together to change our fortunes on the pitch and to improve our league position,” he added.
“At this time we wish to thank Steve Campbell for taking on the caretaker role and for looking after team affairs during the past three weeks.
“We are pleased to confirm that Steve will continue as assistant manager, ably supported by the backroom team of goalkeeping coach Craig Nelson, sports scientist Seamus McCafferty, physio Seb Panczyk, trainer Allan Grieve and kit assistant Stuart Soutar.
“We would ask our supporters to get behind Mark and the team after the international break.”
The Angus club, who parted company with manager Barry Smith last month, lie ninth in League Two with one win from their first five games.
