Home is where the heart is but, for some, their heart can be captured elsewhere.
Such is the case for historian Christopher A Whatley whose love for the Hebridean island, Pabay, a home away from home, led to this history of the beautiful island.
Using archival research, oral interviews, memory and personal experience, Whatley delves into the island’s past and the people who have made Pabay their home. It’s as much a testimony to how people have shaped the island and how, in turn, the island has shaped them.
It is beautifully written and presents a richly detailed and fascinating historical narrative. The fantastic richness of the detail ensures an accurate insight into the island’s past and it is by no means a light, leisurely read – it demands commitment by the reader to fully appreciate all the information.
But it is more than worthwhile giving the book the focus it deserves as it is an elucidating and intelligent book. It shines a unique light on to the island, emphasising not only its physical and geographical assets but also its history.
An intense read, it’s probably best enjoyed by dipping in and out. What is especially evident is the author’s passion, ensuring the reader can engage readily with the history.
Whatley’s personal voice and his experiences from his time on Pabay is ever present and a guiding force through the book.
While island living isn’t for everyone, this is a book that will appeal to anyone with an interest in a unique history and a respect for a different way of life.
