100 years ago

There was no flying at Lochee Park, Dundee, yesterday, in consequenc­e of the fairly high wind which prevailed all day. The stoppage created much disappoint­ment amongst intending fliers. Booking inquiries were very numerous and from the point of view of the promoters of the meeting – the Scottish Aerial Photos Company Ltd – it was unfortunat­e they could not comply with the requests. Had the weather been favourable the number of passengers would have surpassed the substantia­l total of the two previous days.

Mr Edward Heath got a standing ovation from an audience of well over 2,000 after delivering a major policy speech embracing Conservati­ve tax changes and the future prosperity of Scotland in the Caird Hall, Dundee, last night. The rally was an all-party affair, but at one time the queue waiting to gain admission stretched back into High street and Crichton Street. Mr Heath claimed the success of Dundee had been almost entirely due to the work of its firms and industries and people in private enterprise.

The husband of alleged drug-taker Diane Modahl yesterday said his wife has struggled to cope with the pressures since being sent home in disgrace from the Commonweal­th Games. Norwegian Vicente Modahl said his wife had been heartened by the support she had received from both within and outside the sport after the positive results of samples taken in Lisbon more than two months ago. “Diane has always been totally against drugs and now she’s in the middle of one of the highest-profile doping cases ever,” he said.

Hundreds of manufactur­ing jobs are at risk after Dundee’s Michelin tyre factory revealed plans to cut production by as much as a quarter. Workers at the Baldovie site were told jobs are likely to go as the site adjusts to new lower production targets being brought in as a response to falling global demand and cheaper tyres into the market from Asia. New three-year forecasts envisage a maximum of 5.4 million tyres being produced at Dundee each year.
