Public appeal to help charity make itself green and clean

-

Greener Kirkcaldy is asking for the public’s help to reduce the carbon footprint of its community building.

The charity wants to install solar panels and a battery energy storage system at its 8 East Fergus Place base.

The building in Kirkcaldy town centre is open to the public five days a week, delivering cooking workshops in the training kitchen, meals and events, volunteering opportunities, employability projects, a food bank distribution point and a community fridge.

It is also the base for the Cosy Kingdom energy advice service and welcomes around 1,000 visitors every month.

Chief executive Suzy Goodsir said: “We deliver projects to meet the needs and aspirations of local people, tackling fuel and food poverty, protecting and enjoying the environment, and bringing the community together.”

The organisation wants to make the building more environmentally friendly and sustainable and by installing solar panels, estimates it could reduce its carbon footprint by 3.7 tonnes a year and cut its electricity bill by more than £1,800, which would free up funding for more work.

It is also hoped it could become a demonstration site

The charity has already raised almost 90% of its target thanks to grants from the Scottish Government and National Lottery.

It is now asking people to help raise the last £5,000 for its £39,000 goal.
