100 years ago

Dundee lost a valuable point on Saturday through not having a scoring forward or at least an opportunis­t in their team. Of course, the Dens Park Club is not the only one that is suffering from this vital essential at the present time, and it has to be remembered that scoring forwards are not easily picked up nowadays. Falkirk, their opponents, are afflicted in the same manner, but owing to injuries and, in an effort to hit on a scoring combinatio­n, they made no fewer than seven changes in their eleven.

50 years ago

Several members of the BBC Symphony Orchestra have privately expressed concern about irresponsi­ble elements among the last night promenader­s at the Royal Albert Hall, London, on Saturday night. Several players said they had a feeling of being harried by certain sections of the audience. This particular­ly applied to the brass section who had a rather unhappy second half. Several members of the orchestra were very annoyed indeed that some of the audience did not have the courtesy to listen.

25 years ago

Repairs to the central walkway of the Tay Road Bridge will cost nearly £25 million more than was originally budgeted for and could extend the length of time that users have to put up with disruption and delays. A report to a meeting of the Tay Road Bridge Joint Board will say the repairs will be much more extensive than expected. Provision of £800,000 in last year’s budget was made in the knowledge that repairs would be required to the central lighting and refurbishm­ent of the walkway.

Fears have been raised that new and expectant mothers will have to spend their stay in a Fife hospital alongside sick and dying patients. Staff at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy have expressed dismay at NHS Fife’s plans to take eight beds from the maternity ward to move in patients with gynaecolog­ical problems from the end of this month. Proposals which could see early pregnancy patients moved to the midwife-led unit have also surfaced.
