Scottish book of the week

-

7/10 As a new school year begins it’s not hard to imagine that there were more than just a few disgruntled children being waved off at the school gates.

Well, there weren’t any complaints from the schoolchildren of the school ship Tobermory – but that’s because they’re fictional.

As a new term begins on the Tobermory, the class are setting sail for the remote islands of St Kilda, far off the coast of Scotland.

After being shown an old fisherman’s diary, Ben and Fee MacTavish and their classmates set out to hunt for hidden Viking treasure but soon discover they’re not the only ones.

In a race against time, the young crew of Tobermory will need to use all their skills to make sure their adventure isn’t thwarted.

Quirky and curious, The Secret of the Waterfall is an imaginative novel that older children and young adults are sure to love.

The imaginative aspect of the book is enhanced by the fantastic illustrations by Iain McIntosh.

Not only does the story centre around a fun adventure but the delivery of historical facts and information about various topics such as Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Vikings make it an educational read too.

Aimed at the nine to 12 age group, McCall Smith’s ability to tackle issues that are relevant to his younger audience – the disintegration of friendships and bullying – is impressive.

He handles these topics sensitively within the plot line and I’m sure many younger readers will find comfort in recognising their struggles reflected by these lovable characters.

At times these issues take precedence over the book’s action, which may disappoint some adrenaline-favouring readers.

Nonetheless, this renowned author has a lovely way of writing for children – age appropriate without being condescending.

I have no doubt younger readers will, like their adult counterparts, enjoy the work of McCall Smith and will find it easy to immerse themselves in the fun-filled imaginary world on board Tobermory.
