The sale of high-class clothes for men at prices lower that they can be obtained anywhere else in the world. This is the new venture launched upon by Mr Mallaby Deeley, MP for East Willesden. What he is offering, he says, is not surplus or derelict stock, but stock bought and to be bought – high-grade cloth which anyone may see and handle for himself. All suits will be made to measure and patterns will be sent to customers. The first 100,000 suits will show no profit, it is explained, owing to the initial outlay.

Dunfermline have booked a very promising youngster on an “S” form. He’s 16-year-old Jim Scott, centre-forward with the scoring touch. Jim has left school and will train with the East End fulltimers in the forenoons and do ground staff work in the afternoons. Meanwhile Jim continues to play with Leven Royal Colts, who are still interested in the Scottish Juvenile Cup and for whom he has scored around 68 goals this season. Some going! No wonder manager George Farm predicts a bright future for the lad.

A desperate search last night failed to find a fisherman missing after the Arbroath-registered vessel Sharridale was in collision with a supply ship in the North Sea. The fishing boat sank within minutes of the accident, which happened 30 miles east of Peterhead at around 4.40pm. The supply boat, the German-registered Huntetor, which is operated by Ocean Inchcape Ltd and is based at Aberdeen, was damaged but was able to take part in the rescue operation. All the Sharridale’s crew were from Arbroath.

Carnoustie’s ambitions of hosting future Open Championships have been boosted after R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers gave the Angus links course his seal of approval. There had been concerns that the 172,000-strong crowd at last summer’s staging – a record for Carnoustie – was too low for golf’s governing body and it might not remain on the Open’s pool of venues. However, Mr Slumbers said he was confident Carnoustie was capable of attracting far more spectators in future.
