Wilson hails secondhalf display as City are held by Spiders

-

Brechin City and Queen’s Park shared the spoils after drawing 0-0 at Glebe Park in last night’s rearranged League 2 fixture.

Currently rooted to the foot of the table, and seven points from safety, Mark Wilson’s men were unable to break down fourth-placed side from Glasgow as they notched up a second scoreless draw on the trot.

The Spiders enjoyed the lion’s share of possession and pressure straight from the kickoff and should have grabbed the lead after 13 minutes when Adam King delivered a pin-point free-kick into the Brechin box for Peter Grant whose header came back off the post with Grant steering the rebound past the post.

The visitors were pinning City into their own half during those early stages but were unable to turn their superiority into clear-cut opportunities.

They almost paid the price in the 33rd minute when City skipper Jonathan Page headed a Paul Allan corner just inches past Wullie Muir’s left-hand post.

The visitors responded immediately with Jake Davidson firing a 20-yard right-foot drive wide of the target and came close again five minutes before the break when City keeper Lewis McMinn had to look sharp to keep out a David Galt piledriver.

City started the second half the better side but it was Queen’s who had the first opportunity in the 55th minute when Galt tried a shot from the edge of the box which was held by McMinn. City hit back and Andy Jackson was desperately unlucky to see a drive palmed away by Muir.

Ryan Finnie then tried a shot for the visitors from 35 yards but it was well wide of the target.

The second half was proving to be much more evenly balanced than the opening 45 minutes with City forcing themselves back into the match with some good build-up play.

The last two chances of the match fell to City with a Page header kicked off the line by Ryan Finnie and substitute Kieran Inglis blasting a closerange shot over the bar seconds later.

City boss Mark Wilson said: “We didn’t start the match all that well but as the half wore on we got better.

“We told the boys at half-time that we needed to get further up the pitch and I felt that the players were great in the second half and on another night we might have got a victory.” Attendance: 394.
