SHEEP: Market in conjunctio­n with annual show and sale of Beltex prime hoggets

Caledonian Marts Ltd sold 1,702 prime hoggets, ewes and tups in conjunctio­n with the annual show and sale of Beltex prime hoggets.

Judge Stuart Stark from MJ Stark Ltd, Paisley, awarded the championsh­ip and first prize for a hogget up to 42kg to Mitchell McDonald, Newbigging.

Weighing 41.6kg, it was purchased by Mr Stark.

Mr McDonald also won the reserve championsh­ip and top prize for a 46kg+ hogget. It weighed 46kg and made £136 to W Shearer, Burnbrae, Strathaven.

Outwith the prize list, top price of the day went to Kincraigie, Strathmigl­o, for Texels at £131 and to a top of 293ppkg for a 41.6kg Beltex from RA Campbell and Son, Meikle Seggie. Overall average for 1,205 sold was 226.6ppkg (-11.5p on the week, or +33.6p on the year).

Heavy hoggets (302) (45.6kg+) ave £110 (-£5.32 on the week). Also forward were 500 cast ewes and rams. All classes were dearer and short of buyers requiremen­ts.

Heavy ewes ave £111.76 selling to £160 twice for Texels firstly from Easter Dullatur, Dullatur and secondly from Pardovan Holdings.

Export ewes ave £75.07 selling to £84 for Blackface Ewes from Gartlea.

Cast rams sold to £140 twice, firstly for Suffolks from West Kelt, Denny and secondly for Texels from Knock O Ronald.
