Tay views from Newport hill
A striking house in Newport occupies a wraparound plot high on the village hillside. Its elevated position gives glorious views across the Tay and it has been cleverly extended to maximise both natural light and its river outlook
With shops, pubs, an amazing restaurant, easy access to Dundee and a proper “village” feel, it’s no wonder Newport is a place people love to live.
And that’s before you factor in its biggest asset: amazing views.
Newport’s location on the hillside above the mouth of the Tay means having river views is the rule rather than the exception.
Norwood sits near the top of the village with easy access onto the A92. Number 38 sits opposite a nature trail and has views across the Tay as well as along the river in both directions.
Steve and Kamila Redman bought the house five years ago and live there with their two children, aged four and two.
Steve, 33, works as a commercial diver and the home is decorated with diving helmets and other nautical memorabilia.
Originally a modest little home, 38 Norwood has been extended over its lifetime and now has four bedrooms, two reception rooms and a family room downstairs.
A hexagonal foyer with plenty of windows leads into a large hallway with a dining room, breakfasting kitchen with views along the river to Tayport, and utility room off to one side.
The most show-stopping space is the living room, where a vaulted ceiling and cleverly angled windows make the most of natural light and the stunning views.
A glazed door leads out onto a balcony with glass balustrade that provides the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine while watching the sunset.
Running off the hall are three double bedrooms and a family bathroom. One of these is used as Steve’s study.
“This is my favourite room,” he says. “You get the view straight across the river.”
The master bedroom has a dressing room and en suite shower room, as well as patio doors onto its own balcony.
“When the kids were very young Kamila would put them down for a nap in here then get out on the balcony to enjoy the sunshine,” Steve smiles.
Stairs lead down to the family room, which has glazed doors out onto a patio and its own set of steps from the road. This could be converted into a self contained bedsit with Airbnb potential.
“What we like is that the house gets the sunlight all day so there’s always a bright spot to sit in,” Steve says.
The garden wraps around the house and contains a large garage and a summerhouse that’s angled to look west along the river and catch the evening sun.
The house could do with a bit of redecorating but is a special home in a superb location.
Steve and Kamila, 27, are hoping to stay in the area. “I grew up in Tayport and we love this part of the world,” he says. “Ideally we would like something with a bit of land so we can set up a holiday let business.
“The oil industry goes through ups and downs so we want to build up a business we can fall back on when we need to.”
