Wright content with ‘fair result’

St Johnstone remain the only team in the Premiership yet to score against St Mirren after a second 0-0 draw of the season against the Buddies, writes Eric Nicolson.

The game was a big improvement on the 2-0 defeat the last time Saints were in Paisley, though.

The battling qualities, team spirit and defensive solidity that have been the foundation of their revival since that day were all in evidence last night, particularly in the last 10 minutes following a Liam Craig red card.

Attention now turns to beating Livingston on Saturday to close the gap on the teams above them as the race for top six football approaches its climax.

Perth boss Tommy Wright said: “It was a fair result and a good point for both sides. I’m disappointed how we played at times.

“I think Sunday took a lot out of us, mentally more than physically. We were a bit loose in possession.

“The last 10 plus injury time we had to defend for our lives and show a lot of character. I’m proud of the players because it’s not easy here.

“It takes us a point closer to Hibs and that’s what we’ve got to be positive about.”

Callum Hendry missed the game with a foot injury sustained in training but Wright is “fairly confident” he will be back for the Livi match.

St Mirren manager Jim Goodwin said: “Frustration is the key word tonight.

“Sometimes when a team goes down to 10 men it makes it harder to break them down. St Johnstone did very well in that time and we didn’t put enough crosses in to make them defend.”
