‘Unacceptable’ performance hits Blue Brazil’s promotion ambition

-

Cowdenbeath boss Gary Bollan felt his team’s poorest performance in weeks cost his team crucial promotion points in the defeat at Elgin last night.

The Fifers led against the run of play at the break before being hit by a comeback in the second half.

Bollan said: “We were fortunate to go in at the break 1-0 up because we didn’t play well in that first half.

“It was definitely an unacceptable performance.”

Cowdenbeath opened the scoring on seven minutes – Kyle Miller found Jordan Allan on the edge of the box and he switched direction before slipping a low drive wide of keeper Tom McHale.

Cowden goalie Rae was beaten to Shane Sutherland’s through ball by Brian Cameron, but the midfielder’s tight angle effort on goal was blocked in the goalmouth.

The second half was a lively affair with Elgin levelling things up within three minutes. Rae was caught out by Archie Macphee’s swerving 35-yard free-kick which skipped over him into the net.

The Fifers were behind 10 minutes later after Sutherland latched on to a long ball and steered the ball wide of Rae from 12 yards.

Back came Cowdenbeath and sub Jordyn Sheerin, on the park for just five minutes, lashed home an equaliser.

But Cowdenbeath were on terms for just two minutes as poor defending at a MacPhee corner allowed Cameron to head home at the back post on 67 minutes.

Cowden defender Jamie Todd was shown a second yellow card for shoving the referee and was sent packing.
