Church’s £480,000 restoration plan will go on show to public
A £480,000 restoration plan for Kirkcaldy’s Old Kirk tower will be put before the public today.
Drawings and a model outlining the proposals will be on show in the Mercat shopping centre from 10am to 2.30pm and people will be asked for their opinions.
The church celebrates its 775th anniversary this year and will host an anniversary concert tomorrow at 7.30pm.
All money raised will go to the restoration fund.
The church is now used as a community venue run by the Old Kirk Trust.
Chairwoman Rosemary Potter said the tower was showing signs of age, with a leaking roof and window panes blown out during recent storms.
“The townsfolk supported us magnificently when we first opened the kirk to the community in 2011,” she said.
“We have since built up a venue which fulfils the Old Kirk’s historic purpose of community service and worship and, we hope, proves the public’s trust in our venture is well-founded.
“Now we are seeking support for this next important part of Kirkcaldy’s heritage.
“This community consultation is important to potential funders of the £480,000 project because they want to be assured the people of Kirkcaldy approve of the plans and support the trust’s efforts to keep the tower open for visitors.”
Donations towards a “sponsor a step” scheme for the 100 steps to the bell have already raised more than £13,000 but Mrs Potter said further fundraising was required.
Tickets for the concert are available from Rosemary on 01592 265499 or on the door on the night.
