Sport way down list of priorities at this point

- Breaking the Ice Eve Muirhead Eve Muirhead: Briefly back at the venue where she competed in her first Olympics.

It goes without saying that we’re absolutely gutted the World Championships were cancelled a couple of days before they were due to start. Things seemed to move really quickly on Thursday after it had looked like we would be playing as usual, and fans were going to be allowed into the arena.

But as we’ve seen with virtually every other sport, the coronavirus problem has escalated and sport is a long way down the list of priorities.

We had arrived in Canada feeling really positive about our chances and we were going to have the support of lots of family and friends.

Personally, this was almost like a first Worlds again after I had missed the previous two.

Hopefully I will get plenty more opportunities.

We’re not alone. Every team will be disappointed. Team Hasselborg from Sweden have won Olympic and European gold and are desperate to complete the set.

For the host nation, Canada, Kerri Einarson had beaten the big two – Teams Homan and Jones – to qualify and who knows if that chance will come around again.

We’d stopped off in Vancouver on the way to British Columbia for some practice, which took me back to the arena where I competed in my first Olympics.

Thinking back to being at the top of the sport 10 years ago and still being at the top of the sport now has given me good vibes for moving forward.

I had hoped it would help in a small way in the Worlds but I’ll bottle the good vibes for the build-up to the next Olympics.

Men’s event could be called off too

Nothing definite has been decided by the World Curling Federation but it isn’t looking good for the men’s event in Scotland at the end of the month.

Fingers crossed there is an improvement with the virus.

It’s a once in a generation thing to have a big championship like this in Scotland and it would be a real shame if it goes the same way as ours.

We’re never going to host a Winter Olympics so this is as big as it will get for our sport in this country.

The Emirates Arena will be a fantastic venue and the transformation into a curling venue is taking shape.

As is the case with lots of other sporting events over the next few weeks, we just have to hope for the best really.
