Clydesdale spreads a little Magic at stallion show –

Supreme winner no stranger to rosettes with string of accolades in the bag from previous shows

The supreme champion at the National Stallion Show was the Clydesdale Doura Magic Touch from Charlotte Young of Hall Stud, Ayr.

Her winner, by Glebeview Sir Charles, and out of the Carnaff Ambassador-sire mare, Ballinrees Lady Jayne, is no stranger to the spotlight, having claimed the Cawdor Cup two years ago.

He took the male and supreme titles at last year’s National Stallion Show, won the male championsh­ip at last year’s Royal Highland and then took the breed’s reserve champion of champions ticket at the Winter Fair back in November.

Charlotte’s female winner was the three-year-old filly, Littleward Megan. Bred in Stirlingsh­ire by the late Charlie Carrick and son Matthew, and bought by Charlotte last year, she is by Arradoul Balvenie and out of Littleward Lady Athenia.

The Cawdor Cup heads across the Irish Sea with Geoffrey and Lesley Tanner of Castlerock, who lifted the prestigiou­s trophy with their home-bred yearling colt, Downhill Master Tom.

By Eskechragg­an Ernest, and out of Garleton Betty, he was a notable winner on the northern Irish circuit last summer and was victorious at the Co Londonderr­y Foal Show in December.

Reserve for the Cawdor Cup was the Clark family’s yearling colt, Muirton Spirit, from Madderty, Crieff.

The reserve female champion was Harry Emerson’s two-year-old filly, Lutteringt­on Butterfly.

By Collessie New Approach, she is out of Coachmills Lady Helen, and was brought once again by the Black family of Collessie.

Donna Lochtie, of Glenfarg, took the supreme Shetland Pony championsh­ip with Hawkdale Dixie, a 14-year-old black standard mare by Roseremus of Transy, out of Hawkdale Destiny.

The miniatures were led by Hazel Clarke of Stewarton, with Halstock Cam’s Warrior, a nine-year-old stallion by Alverscrof­t Tot Campari, out of Wincy of Knowe.

In the Highland Pony ring, the championsh­ip went to West Kilbride’s Gillian Wardrop with Carlung Winston, a three-year-old stallion by Carlung Jed, out of Nymph of Carlung.

Standing reserve was Bowmore Ben

Cruachan from the Bonars of Kirkmuirhi­ll.

An eight-year-old gelding, by Mossside Iain Mhor and out of Bowmore Lady Laura, he was reserve at the same event two years ago.

Best Mountain and Moorland was Romanno Riverdance from the Nicoll Show Team, Lugar, Cumnock. By Stanleygra­nge Regal Heights, it is out of Mirage. The reserve in that section went to Trefynys Teccata from C Barr of Kilmarnock.

Other leading Clydesdale awards included: Senior gelding and gelding champion – JM McMillan with Mill Geordie. Junior gelding and reserve gelding – A Noble, Windyknowe Barra.

Stallion, two years old – S Mellor, Greenends Thunderstr­uck.

Senior yearling colt, reserve male and Cawdor Cup winner – G Tanner, Downhill Master Tom.

Junior yearling colt – R Sibbald, Thorn Union Jack.

Ridden Clydesdale – B Lindsey with Bandirran Sir Daniel.

Clydesdale young handlers – 1 Hannah Lindsay; 2 Rachael Dunn; 3 Edward Leverett.
