Embrace the ‘Summer of Staycations’

Affordable, convenient and eco-friendly, the demand for domestic holidays looks set to grow

-

Planning a holiday at the moment means managing lots of unknowns, from Brexit-related changes and struggling airlines to Coronavirus restrictions.

But one key trend is set to dominate the industry and individual’s holiday plans for 2020 - staycations

Going Green

According to the Pinterest 100 report for 2020, an annual list of trends compiled by Pinterest based on usage, searches for eco-friendly travel are up 73%.

Also on the rise are queries about staycations, with searches up 38% according to Pinterest 100.

“Like many industries, tourism is reaching an eco-conscious crossroad. For some travelers, that means monitoring their environmental impact,” Pinterest writes in its report. “They’re embracing cleaner transit methods, or even taking staycations instead of long-distance getaways.

“For others, it’s more about their cultural impact. They’re avoiding overcrowded hot spots and picking destinations with a smaller tourist scene, but more meaningful cultural opportunities.”

The Benefits of Staycations

With less distance to travel, no long-haul flights necessary and the possibility of relying solely on public transport to reach your destination, staycations are an eco-friendly option for taking a break .

Plus, even once you get to your domestic destination, it’s possible to find camping sites, hotels and other accommodation that is designed to be as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible.

But there are lots of other benefits to staycations, too.

In 2019, Barclays published the results of its research into the UK domestic tourism boom. In its report on the Great British staycation, more than half of those surveyed (52%) planned to take most or all of their year’s holidays in the UK.

And according to the Barclays report, the dominant reasons for the rise of staycations aren’t about sustainability. Convenience, the desire to replicate previous holidays and affordability topped the list of reasons for spending more holiday time in the UK.
