Euro chiefs may ‘void’ season, says McCann

-

Former Dundee manager Neil McCann thinks Uefa could recommend that the entire football season be voided.

The ex-Rangers, Hearts and Scotland winger – who spent 18 months in the Dens Park hot seat – says finishing the campaign with an ‘as-it-stands’ approach would cause chaos in the game.

Reports in a Sunday newspaper claimed Prime Minister Boris Johnson would intervene this week to end professional leagues across the UK.

It was also suggested the PM’s decision would lead to the SPFL crowning Celtic, Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers champions in their respective divisions.

Hearts are said to be considering a legal challenge if they are relegated from the Scottish Premiership.

McCann said: “I think Uefa will go ‘void’ because it’s too much hassle to finish the leagues ‘as it stands’.

“Uefa might kick it back to the individual organisations and say, ‘You deal with it’.

“Hearts could be up in arms. Partick Thistle (bottom of the Championship) could be up in arms.

“There’s so much to sort out.

The fairest way to go, if you’re going to go with a blanket approach, is to void.”

Ex-Dark Blues boss Alex Rae, a title winner with Rangers in 2005, questioned the possibility of current league leaders being crowned champions.

He wrote on Twitter: “If, in a horse race, a horse racing over a mile starts and one horse is 10 lengths clear and the rest have fallen and the lead horse falls at the last hurdle, do they give the lead horse the win as he was in front?

“Do the bookies pay out as a winner? Asking for a friend.”
