Long-serving DC Thomson artist Roy Myers, aged 85

A former DC Thomson art department manager has died, aged 85.

Roy Myers worked at the company for 39 years, starting with the firm as a lettering artist in 1960 and retiring in 1999.

Born and brought up in Sheffield, Roy married his childhood sweetheart Shirley in 1958 and the young couple moved to Dundee when Roy was offered the job at DC Thomson.

Previously he had worked as an RAF radar operator and a sign writer in Sheffield.

Roy and Shirley went on to have three children – Duncan, Steven and Sarah, as well as four grandchildren Kimberley, Claire, Mark and Kevin, and two greatgrandchildren, Harry and Luke.

Roy had a number of interests including golf and was a member of the DC Thomson Press Club, as well as Monifieth Grange Golf Club.

His other interests included cricket, snooker, gardening and travelling.

After retiring, Roy kept active and enjoyed bowling, going on many holidays with Barnhill Bowling Club where Shirley is also a member.

Daughter Sarah Myers, 52, said: “Dad liked nothing better than having the family around, hearing all their chatter, and of course doing The Courier cryptic crossword, especially on a Tuesday evening when the family were around to help.

“He was a very loving dad and spent a lot of time with us when we were growing up, taking us swimming and to other outings.

“He was very kind and caring, never had a bad word to say about anybody – he was such a lovely mannered man.

“Dad never regretted moving up to Dundee and having his family here.

“He had a great career and a good, long life with lots of friends.

“He met a lot of good people through DC Thomson.

“He always spoke fondly of the company and his career there.”

Roy Myers was born and raised in Sheffield.
