Levenmouth community rallies round residents in need of help

- CLAIRE WARRENDER

More than 20 churches, voluntary groups and community organisations across Levenmouth have joined forces to support locals.

Hundreds of individual volunteers have also signed up to offer help to those who are self-isolating or in vulnerable groups and unable to leave the house. The Covid-19 Levenmouth group was formed following a meeting co-ordinated by Leven Baptist Church minister Peter Foster and received 1,600 followers overnight.

There are now more than 3,000 members offering tips, advice, practical help and emotional support.

Labour councillor Colin Davidson said the response had been both overwhelming and heartening.

“There is a lot of help out there and we will be distributing more than 1,500 leaflets to households across Levenmouth in the coming days explaining to people what’s on offer and how to get in touch.

“We’ve had lots of help from the staff at Diageo who have offered to distribute them after they finish work. That’s a big commitment.

“We are getting the message across that people are not going to be abandoned during this. Individuals will be supported by the community.”

The leaflets will include households from West Wemyss to Upper Largo and will include a list of community organisations, councillors, MSPs and useful phone numbers.

Help on offer will involve everything from shopping deliveries, prescription collections and dog walking to meal provision and even just a listening ear to those feeling isolated or anxious.

“Everybody is working together and no house will be missed,” said Mr Davidson. Over the next six to 12 weeks, if we are healthy, councillors will be in the community, walking the streets to reassure people.

“Peter Foster needs to be congratulated. This goes beyond community spirit.”
