Humankind shines in times of change and adversity

- Mike Donachie

As we settle into the new normal, the silver linings are fascinating

The virus is changing our lives and things will never be the same again. But, as we settle into the new normal, the silver linings are fascinating.

Again, as I did last week, I’m adding this caution: I am not suggesting Covid19 is a good thing. As I write, deaths worldwide are nearing five figures and we’re starting to express the total number of infections in fractions of a million.

The world economy is tanking and jobs, businesses and livelihoods are vanishing with alarming speed. This is in no way a happy period in our history.

But, despite all that, it’s amazing how humans can accept and even rationalise disastrous events. I keep finding myself referring to medical advances made in wartime, or the inventions that only happened because of a crisis: from the widespread use of antiseptics to tinned food. Or think of how grim, industrialised cities have produced incredible music and art. Humans are really something. We shine.

I wonder if we’re in that moment now. The year 2020 will go down as one filled with dreadful events – the virus will continue to tear around the world for months – but this could be our opportunity to start something new.

We’re already seeing it, in the good humour and goodwill in communities. Even as people are supporting each other, they are condemning unacceptable behaviour. Social norms are evolving.

How about those people trying to resell cleaning products? They thought they were clever, then found they were pariahs. Even in parts of the US, the authorities are seizing and redistributing items and preparing charges against profiteers. Uh, I think that might be socialism, you guys. Please carry on.

I’m watching news break about a politician who profited by selling shares at the right moment – and the public outrage. Firms that treat their staff poorly are being shunned. Employers with good values are celebrated. Even temporarily, some pollution is dissipating and the waters of Venice are clearing.

Dare we hope? Could this be a turning point? Is this what it took to unite us?

It’s the end of the world as we know it, and maybe, one day, we will feel fine.
