Prime hoggets in sale ring

Caledonian Marts Ltd, Stirling, sold 758 prime hoggets, ewes and tups at their weekly sale.

All classes of hoggets followed the national trend, being easier on the week, with the overall average for 489 hoggets sold 171.1ppk (-70p) on the week (-14ppk on the year).

Well-fleshed hoggets 45kg+ ave 188pkkg or £92, with leaner, smaller types harder to sell, which brought down the overall average.

Butcher-type lambs sold to £116 from Lands of Drumhead, Balfron for a pair of 52kg Texels.

Also forward were 269 cast ewes and rams. In line with the weekly trend, all ewes were considerab­ly cheaper.

Heavy ewes ave £83.60 selling to £96 for Texel ewes from AM Duncan, Easter Dullatur, Kilsyth.

Export ewes ave £42.71 selling to £68 for Cheviot Cross ewes also from AM Duncan, Easter Dullatur.

Cast rams sold to £90 for a Texel from Dexter Logan, Greenhead, Alva. Other leading prices: Suffolk, £93 Balhelvie, Texel £85 Bonsor Estate, Mule £81 Balhelvie, BF £44 Braco Castle.
