A Fife man needed hospital treatment after being assaulted during a fight over a trolley at a wholesalers earlier this week.

Alan Cunningham, from Leslie, says he was punched repeatedly, bitten on both hands, spat on, thrown to the ground and had a tooth knocked out as he visited Booker Cash and Carry in Kirkcaldy’s Randolph Industrial Estate.

The 60-year-old, who runs a snack van business, has chronic lung disease and had ventured out for the first time in 14 days after having to self isolate. But the dad-of-two revealed how he was attacked by a man who already had three full trolleys when he took a fourth empty one.

“This was my first chance to pop out to get supplies for my snack van,” he said. “Now I won’t even be able to work because of my injuries.

“I have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among other health conditions.

“My 51-year-old wife also has underlying health conditions so we’re both high risk.”

The incident took place at around

9.45am on Monday.

“He told me not to take the trolley, I said it wasn’t his and walked on,” Alan recalled.

“Out of nowhere he punched me in the side of the face and knocked me to the ground. He bit my left thumb and right pinky finger right through to the bone, there was blood everywhere.”

Mr Cunningham said he was attacked again in the shop – and was subsequently taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for stitches to his hands.

“The shop was full of people, but they didn’t want to come near me because of this coronavirus,” he said.

“It was horrible.”

Booker has declined to comment on the incident, but Police Scotland confirmed they were investigating.

A spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland attended at Randolph Industrial Estate in Kirkcaldy at 8.30am on Monday March 23 following a disturbance involving two men.

“One man required hospital treatment and inquiries are continuing.”
