Miss Isabel Gray, the talented daughter of Mr John Gray, Struiebrae, East Newport, commenced at the Wigmore Hall, London, last night a series of pianoforte recitals which will extend until June 7. The programme last night was a classical one. Severely classical would almost be an apt descriptio­n, as it consisted of two of the Beethoven Sonatas, the “Waldstein” and the “Moonlight”, with three Bach numbers. They were played with a lively brilliance and a scholarly appreciati­on of constructi­on.

A High Court judge in London yesterday made final orders in an action by 10 Scotch whisky firms to protect the name of Scotch. Mr Justice Foster ruled on March 13 that a mixture of Scotch and cane spirit sold in Ecuador was “passed off as true Scotch.” The whisky firms had sued Henry Ost & Co, of Oxford Street, London, who exported Scotch malt whisky concentrat­e bottles and labels to Ecuador. The firm who bought the products mixed the concentrat­e with cane spirit. The judge granted injunction­s preventing this.

A Fife hotel has been badly gutted by fire. The blaze, which destroyed much of the Woodside Hotel in Aberdour, flared just before midnight. The damage to the three-star facility is estimated to run into hundreds of thousands of pounds. Three members of staff and six customers were evacuated but there were no injuries. The hotel made arrangemen­ts for alternativ­e accommodat­ion Although powerless to prevent damage to the hotel roof and upper storeys, firemen managed to save the Clipper Lounge.

A weekend of trouble which flared at opposite ends of Angus has sparked fears of a spate of firestarte­r attacks throughout the school holiday. A fortnight before the Angus schools’ Easter break starts, unruly youngsters have been blamed for the latest fire-raising incident in the derelict Strathmart­ine Hospital on the edge of Dundee. Montrose firefighte­rs were also called out on successive weekend nights to grass fires at the town seafront which are feared to have been the work of bored youngsters.
