Uefa is planning for play-off with Israel to be played on June 4

-

Uefa wants Scotland to play their Euro 2020 play-off against Israel as early as June 4, after Norway’s assistant manager revealed their schedule.

Steve Clarke’s side were due to play at Hampden this week in the semi-final for the European Championship, with the final against either Norway or Serbia.

But with the coronavirus crisis postponing both the play-offs and the finals, which were due to be partly staged in Glasgow in the summer, European football’s governing body announced the games should now be attempted to be played in June, without specifying an actual date.

And it’s now been revealed that, despite the worldwide lockdown, Uefa want both semifinals involving Scotland, Israel, Norway and Serbia to be played on June 4 – in just 69 days’ time.

Norway assistant manager Per Joar Hansen admitted he was surprised at Uefa’s directive.

He said: “We were told June 4. That’s what we are relating to and working towards.

“But the situation changes from day to day. So it is impossible to plan very much. We have thoroughly prepared for playing against Serbia in March, but by June it will be an entirely different situation.

“Suddenly, we are looking at our squad who may have players who will have played three times a week.

“I travelled this winter to see around 25 players in and around our squad and the only restrictions for the coronavirus I saw was in Dortmund.

“Borussia Dortmund’s doctor told me I could speak to Erling Haaland, but not at the place where the players ate. They began to see it made sense to protect the players.

“It’s just such a strange feeling. No one in our generation has experienced anything like this.”

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell has already voiced his concerns about the prospect of playing in June, with football not expected to return for many months – and a match right at the start of June looks even more unrealistic.

He said: “For us to be able to play an international window in late May or early June we’d be looking at football starting again in May and I don’t see how that’s possible.”
