McGhee feels fans’ frustration

-

Dundee defender Jordan McGhee says he wants football back as much as fans do but insists everyone must adhere to lockdown rules, writes Calum Woodger.

It has been almost three weeks since the Dark Blues last game due to the coronavirus shutdown of Scottish football.

As much as the former Hearts and Falkirk man is missing the action, and despite empathising with supporters, he understands it is necessary.

“We can all see where the fans are coming from, of course,” the 23-year-old said. “It’s difficult for them because for some it’s their only way out, meeting their mates on a Saturday for the game and a few pints.

“Now they’re stuck in doing nothing so it’s tough but we all want the same thing, we all want it back as soon as possible.

“The only way to do that is by staying indoors and by keeping everyone safe so, hopefully, everyone sticks to the guidelines and we can get football back as soon as possible.

“We want to make people’s lives happier and easier again with what we do.”

McGhee admits he is climbing the walls without football but is taking time away from the field to focus on family life and his recovery from a wrist injury.

He added: “I’m lucky I’ve got Match Of The Day on record, pretty much the last full season, so I’ve just been watching that to even get a sniff of games.

“It’s difficult because it’s such a big part of my life with it being my job. Ever since I’ve been able to walk I’ve been kicking a ball so it’s been difficult not being able to do it. But everybody is sacrificing everything at the moment so it’s one I’m going to have to deal with.

“The good thing is I get to spend more time with my family while we wait for this to pass.

“I’m with my girlfriend Megan and my daughter Nellie – she’s only one and a half so she’s keeping us on our toes.

“Apart from that I’m just filling my time the same as most people. When I’m not training I’m watching Netflix or Disney Plus with my wee girl, trying to keep as occupied as possible.

“It’s really hard but it’s something we all need to do.”
