Cowdenbeat­h Town Council have for some time back been urging the Post Office authoritie­s for increased postal facilities. Intimation has now been received that a branch office is to be opened in the Foulford district on June 1 and that additional letter-boxes will be erected at Gilmour Street and Woodend. The letter stated that there was no prospect of getting a later despatch of mails. Bailie Walker said that it was ridiculous that a town the size of Cowdenbeat­h should not have a later despatch than half-past six.

Payment of £21,040 for the purchase of the former Dundee Savings Bank premises in Euclid Crescent was approved by the directors of Dundee High School yesterday. Approval was also given for the spending of about £4,505 on reconstruc­tion, equipment , furniture etc and about £4,000 for the provision of a new biology laboratory. Confirmati­on has been received from the architect that the new dining-hall will be completed for occupation at the beginning of session 1970-71.

Dundee could lose a valuable attraction if the city’s football clubs fail in their respective attempts to make it into the Scottish League’s top flight. Dundee United’s weekend loss at Aberdeen brings the spectre of relegation from the Premier League agonisingl­y close. Meanwhile, Tannadice Street rivals Dundee must wait until the last day of the season to see whether they are promoted. Lord Provost Tom McDonald commented: “When your town’s football teams are doing well, it tends to make everyone feel that bit better.”

Desperate families in Arbroath have been using a free food box inside a political office as they struggle to get by on low incomes. Arbroath East and Lunan councillor Brenda Durno said volunteers kept the box, in the Brothock Bridge informatio­n centre, stocked with food to help constituen­ts. Her comments come as new figures show around one in five children in Angus live in poverty, with the problem worst in some parts of Arbroath where 28.5% of children live in families that cannot afford basic necessitie­s.
