No event in the East of Fife creates more interest than the annual show of the Agricultural Society at Balcarres, Colinsburgh. This year’s show, the 41st, which takes place on Thursday next, will bear the stamp of strong management. The office-bearers are all men of action. The Earl of Lindsay is succeeded in the presidency by Sir Thomas Erskine, baronet, of Cambo, a laird who served his country well and who is held in much esteem by his tenants and those with whom he comes in contact.

Nine youths said to have participated in a gang riot in Kirkton housing scheme, Dundee, were ordered to be detained for 14 days for background reports by Bailie Nigel Law at the Burgh Court yesterday. Burgh prosecutor Mr John Gray told the court that the teenagers had run amok – throwing stones and bricks and shouting gang slogans like “Huns rule” and “We are the young huns.” A large crowd of around 30 had gathered in Old Glamis Road and some had refused to disperse when requested by the police.

News that the sub-post office in Dalhousie Road is to be moved to the Barnhill Shopping Centre was criticised last night as “scandalous.” Barnhill councillor Bruce Mackie said he would be contacting Post Office Counters today after what he claimed was a complete lack of consultation with people in the Dundee suburb. A notice in the window of the office says it will be closing in three weeks and relocating in the shopping centre. Rumours have been circulating about the move for some time.

Parking charges have been fiercely criticised after a Carnoustie café and bakery shut up shop for the final time. Goodfellow and Steven sales director Martin Goodfellow said the “community shop”, which opened in the 1960s, had to close after the number of shoppers using Carnoustie High Street plummeted. He said that Angus Council’s “insensitive” reintroduction of parking charges had contributed to the branch’s demise in the coastal town. “They clearly don’t understand retail,” he said.
