Curling champ Muirhead fined for speeding
Winter Olympics star apologises for driving at 50mph in a 30 zone
World champion curler Eve Muirhead was stopped by police after she was clocked speeding through a village.
Muirhead was fined £400 yesterday after admitting speeding through Crook of Devon on February 16.
Muirhead was allowed to pay the fine at £10 per week after telling the court her income varied depending on her competition results.
The 30-year-old Great Britain skip also had four points added to her licence when she pled guilty by letter at the Justice of the Peace Court in Dundee.
Muirhead admitted clocking 50mph in a 30mph zone on the A977 Kincardine to Kinross road.
Muirhead, of Stirling, apologised and said: “I am not a fast driver and can only put it down to not paying attention on a road I am not familiar with.
“I thought I was out the village, into the countryside and out of the restricted zone, but obviously I was not.”
Depute fiscal Lisa Marshall told the court: “It was at 1.30pm she was stopped by the police and given a warning.”
Muirhead, an athlete employed by UK Sport, said her income was “very dependent on my sport, success at competitions etc”.
She has represented Great Britain at curling at the last three Winter Olympic games and won bronze at Sochi in 2014.
She led her team to the World Championships in 2013 and has won the World Junior Championships on four occasions. She is a double European Champion and eight time winner of the Scottish Curling Championships.
