The question of control of the railways was the chief theme in an address by Mr J. H. Thomas MP at the annual conference of the Locomotive Engineers’ and Firemen’s Society yesterday. We were at the moment in an interesting and peculiar position. Twelve months next August the railways, under the Transport Act, must either revert to their pre-war positions, or some alternative scheme must be found for working them. The present methods were very bad. He said they should not be entrusted to private management.

The western Fire Station, Blackness Road, Dundee, was opened and dedicated yesterday by the Earl of Dalhousie, Lord Lieutenant of Angus. The £493,000 station provides a new headquarters for the Angus Area Fire Brigade and replaces the Central Fire Station, West Bell Street. The Earl inspected the duty watch at the station before the ceremony, He said the new station was strategically placed to provide the best available fire cover for its area with regard to traffic conditions, particularly at peak times.

Police officers in Perth had what can only be described as an unusual back shift at Western Divisional Headquarters. The shift started normally enough and officers didn’t think twice when two lost dogs were handed in to them. A short time later a lost parakeet was handed in. However, that still wasn’t the end of the animal magic for the officers. Next, police had to deal with a particularly slippery customer – a five foot long python! It had been stolen from Pet City the week before and has since been returned to the store.

Road closures outside Perth could cause long delays for music fans visiting the Fair City for weekend events. Friarton Bridge slip roads will be closed from Friday night until Monday morning during a major resurfacing project. Music sensation Lewis Capaldi headlines Perth Festival of the Arts on Saturday, with Fairport Convention playing on Sunday. A tribute band music festival also takes place on Saturday and football fans travelling for crunch Premiership matches are expected to increase traffic around the city.
