Scotland Yard has said that a man answering to the description of Toplis, “wanted” for the taxi murder at Andover, stopped a constable near Penrith yesterday and presented a revolver at him. The constable cycled off for assistance and returned with two other officers. They found the man, who shot at them. They returned the fire and the man was shot through the heart. The description of the dead man tallies in every detail with that of Toplis. As an added precaution, fingerprints have been taken.

Dundee’s air service application to the Air Transport Licensing Board from Loganair Ltd, has brought no objections. The Loganair application is for a passenger, cargo and mail service on the route between Dundee (Leuchars), Edinburgh (optional), Glasgow and Prestwick (optional). The licensing board is holding a public hearing into Loganair’s application on July 1. “This is because the application involves a tariff variation,” a spokesman explained. Dundee Corporation will be represented at the hearing.

A substantial majority of traders in Broughty Ferry and Barnhill fear their sales will drop if a supermarket is given the go ahead in the Balgillo/Claypotts area of Dundee – and many have forecast they would have to cut staff as a result. The fears over sales, job losses and even possible closures have emerged after a survey released in the week when a marathon Scottish Office planning inquiry into four proposed supermarket developments on the city’s eastern outskirts is scheduled to begin in Dundee.

Perthshire could enjoy a major jobs and tourism boost after the council granted planning permission in principle for a major expansion of the Gleneagles Hotel complex. Operators say around 200 jobs will be created through plans to build a holiday park on farmland to the west of the existing resort. Blueprints outline more than 200 lodges and teepees as well as a spa, shops, restaurants and pub.
