100 years ago

“An entirely dishonoura­ble action” was attributed to the Madras Governors, St Andrews, by Mr Joseph Westwood at yesterday’s meeting of the Fife Education Authority held at Kirkcaldy. Negotiatio­ns are proceeding between the governors of the three endowed secondary schools and an Authority committee with a view to the schools being taken over by the Authority. The Madras governors had appointed a headmaster at a salary in excess of what was paid by the Authority to their secondary headmaster­s.

The only thing wrong with the new paddling pool Dundee Corporatio­n have opened at Castle Green, Broughty Ferry, is – there’s no water in it. Youngsters have been dragging their mothers to the pool in the hope of cooling themselves in the traditiona­l toddlers’ ways. But last night the Parks Convener, Bailie Bruce Mackie, said complaints had been received from mothers whose children had slipped on the shiny bed of the pool. It had been drained to let workmen put a coat of paint and sand down.

Astonished overnight travellers could hardly believe their bleary eyes or ears – the London sleeper approachin­g Dundee was 23 minutes early yesterday. The almost unheard of phenomenon had some striding briskly towards the exit while others were more flustered. All were to run into the same obstacle at the stairs – the doors were locked, they could not get out of the station. The train had arrived so early, staff had not yet come in to open up the doors and there was no other way out. Staff arrived shortly afterwards.

John McGinn believes even brilliant Belgium will be fearful of Scotland’s star-studded left-hand side. The Scots head to Brussels to take on the team ranked the best on the planet in the latest Fifa rankings, ahead of world champions France. The Belgians boast Eden Hazard, the £130 million man who has just agreed his giltedged move from Chelsea to Real Madrid. The teams play in the King Baudouin Stadium tomorrow night during this Euro 2020 qualifying Group I clash.
