Miles of woodland and moor are still ablaze in the Highlands, and thousands of workers are battling with the flames. A staggering figure will be the result when the total amount of damage is ascertained. Four estates have been destroyed and many hundreds of game have perished. Deer have fled for miles pursued by the flames. Thousands of acres of fine forests have disappeared and on one estate about £80,000 of damage has been done. Dundee is to have the first Scottish prestige employment centre and “job shop”. It will be in the Overgate development, for use by the Department of Employment and Productivity. Approval of the development was granted last night by the Town Planning Committee, to whom a courtesy plan was submitted by the Ministry of Public Building and Works. The Ministry said they were proposing to lease three floors of office space in the tower block, along with an adjoining shopping unit on the upper walkway.

Chief Constable William Spence last night welcomed the approval earlier in the day of CCTV security cameras for areas of Dundee and Perth, including the city centres. “Tayside Police support the concept of CCTV,” he said. “The impact of this initiative is likely to be far reaching in dealing with potential anti-social behaviour and will lead to much safer communities in Tayside. Whilst there is still work to be done, the public can look forward to a reduction in violence, robbery and car crime.”

The out of hours GP service in Glenrothes is facing the axe under controversial proposals to be considered this week. The recommendation, to be considered by the integration joint board, has been branded a whitewash by campaigners, who said they were disappointed by the move but not surprised.
