28-year-old arrested after man reportedly stabbed outside shop

Witnesses say a row broke out as people stood in a socially distanced queue

A 28-year-old man has been arrested after another man was reportedly stabbed in broad daylight outside a shop in Broughty Ferry.

Police raced to the scene in the Barnhill area of the town after the alarm was raised just before 1.30pm yesterday.

A section of street directly outside the Iceland store in Campfield Square was cordoned off for several hours.

Witnesses said an argument had broken out as people were standing in the socially distanced queue to get inside the shop.

A 48-year-old man was taken Ninewells Hospital for treatment. He was released later in the day. Police remained at the scene around 4.45pm.

One nearby shop worker said: “An argument started when someone was coughing and splutterin­g but they were not wearing a face mask.

“There was some shouting fighting.

“It is really quite shocking and a crazy thing to have happened. I have never seen or heard of anything like that happening in this area in all the time I have worked here. It is normally a really nice area.”

The shopping district also houses a Co-Op, Ladbrokes, The Barn pub and other business premises, most of which are closed because of lockdown.

A nearby resident said: “I didn’t see anything until all the police arrived. I don’t know what happened but there was quite a lot of commotion.”

A police spokesman said: “We were called around 1.20pm to a report of a disturbanc­e in the Campfield Square area of Dundee. A 48-year-old man sustained an injury to his chest and was taken by the Scottish Ambulance Service to Ninewells Hospital and released after treatment.

“A 28-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

“Inquiries are ongoing to find out the full circumstan­ces of what happened.”

The Scottish Ambulance Service and Iceland did not respond to a request for comment. and
