Tartan yogi is married at home by TV personality
Finlay and Alan’s ceremony was officiated by star Michelle Visage
A Dundee couple were stunned when a Hollywood star stepped in to save their wedding – by officiating it herself.
RuPaul’s Drag Race and Strictly Come Dancing personality Michelle Visage volunteered to conduct Finlay Wilson and Alan Lambie’s ceremony after hearing how they had had to cancel their wedding due to coronavirus.
Finlay, 33, is best known as the kilted yogi after taking tartan-clad exercise around the world in viral social media clips and on TV shows.
The couple had planned to wed on June 7 to mark the anniversary of their engagement, when Finlay proposed to fellow yoga teacher Alan, 41, on stage at the massive Pride march in Washington DC.
They were heartbroken at cancelling their nuptials, but the big RuPaul Drag Race fans were thrilled when they heard star judge Michelle was looking for a couple to marry on TV.
Alan said: “We were supposed to be getting married at home but when coronavirus happened, we kept hoping we could keep the date but it just kept getting closer and closer and we had to cancel.
“We had put it off until next year but we were so bummed out about it and the whole time we kept coming up to milestones, like when we were supposed to be getting things like catering, chairs, and how it would be so many weeks away.”
TV judge, presenter and singer Michelle has been hosting her new show How’s Your Head, Hun on BBC3 during lockdown and said the Scots were “the perfect couple” for her Pride wedding special.
After she offered to host the ceremony via Zoom call, they had 36 hours to transform their Dundee home and garden into a wedding venue.
Neighbours decorated the street with bunting, a friend donated a cake and the lads themselves landscaped the garden to dig out an “aisle”.
Finlay said: “Michelle is amazing, she’s just like she is on TV, she jokes around and even the ceremony was quite humorous.
“She’s so lovely, she said she was so excited to marry us and to make this happen.
“The ceremony was wonderful. She is ordained in the US, so that makes our wedding legal, it’s the same as if you are getting married on holiday, and the certificate will come in the post and we might need to register it here.”
During the Covid-19 lockdown, Finlay and Alan have been teaching hundreds of students and children with online lessons.
They got engaged last year in another video that went viral – Finlay was demonstrating kilted yoga on a British consulate float in the Washington DC Pride parade, and had arranged the big moment as a surprise, with confetti cannons firing off when Alan happily said yes.
The couple had planned a trip to LA in the autumn, which has been cancelled, so they will be arranging a “mini-moon” when travel restrictions are relaxed.
In the meantime, they are enjoying married life.
Finlay said: “What’s for you won’t go by you, so even though our wedding was cancelled, it was meant to be.”
