An important piece of Dundee’s maritime history, the old Tay ferry Abercraig, has been scrapped in Malta despite the Abercraig Action Committee’s efforts to return her to Dundee. The Abercraig – the last surviving “Fifie” – has been in Valetta harbour, Malta, since 1968 after she and her sister ship Scotscraig were taken out of service with the opening of the Tay Road Bridge in 1966. The scrapping of the boat was discovered inadvertently by Dundee man Alan Brown while on holiday in Malta.

Angus health chiefs are launching an action plan in a bid to reverse a rising fall rate among the area’s OAPs that is bucking the national downward trend. The number of pensioners admitted to hospital following a fall has rocketed by a third in the past three years to more than 25 in every 1,000, putting the area well above the national average and accounting for more than 6% of all emergency cases. In a single month last year 80 over-65s were taken to A&E. Almost half of those taking a tumble are over 85.
