Chain won’t reopen all sites this year

A restaurant chain with several premises in Tayside and Fife has warned it won’t reopen all of its sites this year.

Frankie and Benny’s owner said it was assessing which restaurants to reopen as some locations wouldn’t attract enough customers to be worthwhile.

The American Italian restaurant operates from the Overgate Shopping Centre in Dundee, St Catherine’s Leisure Park in Perth, Fife Central Retail Park in Kirkcaldy and Fife Leisure Park in Dunfermline.

Parent company The Restaurant Group has previously said it was looking to slash the number of restaurants.

The group also owns Wagamama, Garfunkel’s and Chiquito, which has a restaurant in Dunfermline.

The company said that one in 10 of its sites will not reopen before the end of the year.

The sites, largely in airports, will open next year at the earliest, as they are unlikely to attract enough customers to make reopening worthwhile.

The affected sites are in areas “where footfall is anticipated to remain considerably weak (primarily in some airport locations)”, the company said in an update for shareholders yesterday.

It is understood the premises within the Overgate Shopping Centre Dundee has set a date to reopen.

Staff will be on site for the week commencing August 10, with the restaurant to reopen on August 24.

The news follows a warning yesterday by Burger King that it is looking to close one in 10 UK shops.

It emerged earlier this month that Bella Italia at Fife Leisure Park in Dunfermline will not reopen.

The Restaurant Group announcement raises concerns for the jobs of those who work at the sites, as the government’s furlough scheme, which covers salaries, will end in October.

It did not immediately provide an answer to what will happen to the staff.

All the stores that will reopen this year will have started serving customers by the end of September, the company said.

Meanwhile, 60% of its sites that open sometime before the end of August will be given a chance to take advantage of the government’s new Eat Out To Help Out scheme, which gives diners up to 50% off their meal during the first three days of the week. in
